First Friday
by Shila Griffith
If you appreciate art, design, culture and an amazing diverse group of people First Friday in Old City Philadelphia is the place to be. This event occurs the first Friday of every month between 5pm and 9pm. All of the galleries are open and free to the public for people explore artwork and design, much created by local artists. These nights are perfect for a date or just a night out with friends.
This event was organized in 1991 by a number of galleries that worked together to have “a collaborative open house evening.” The galleries provide for many different types of artwork including sculptures, photographs and paintings, much of which is abstract. In addition, there are some galleries and stores that feature impressively designed furniture, lighting and accessories that range from modern to traditional to retro in style. Participating galleries are generally between 2nd and 3rd and include the Wexler Gallery, Clay Studio and the F.U.E.L gallery at Third and Arch that was the at one point The Real World house. One can also find establishments focused on specific international cultures as well.
The atmosphere is chill, diverse and exciting all at the same time. The streets are crowded with all different types of people of all ages from many different areas. This characteristic makes this event the perfect location for people watching. Depending on what is going on that particular night one can find just as many events on the sidewalks as in the galleries. You can see anything from people performing with their band members, selling their own artwork or jewelry and or even authentic belly dancers performing.
Although the area is perfect for walking, everyone should receive fair warning that if one drives down to Old City parking on the street can be an issue if one does not arrive early. For my own experience, most can find some parking areas nearby however but on extremely nice nights they understandably fill up quickly and can be more expensive. The best way to remedy this problem (if one must drive) is to arrive fairly early and take a couple friends. This way you have more people to enjoy the event with and also split the cost of parking. If one wants to avoid driving altogether there are always different types of public transportation available.
Old City also offers a lot of restaurants, so the area allows one for a perfect night out. One can go to First Friday in the evening and then later in the night to one of the many restaurants or bars; many of which are found on nearby Market Street. Anyone living in or near Philadelphia that appreciates creativity should definitely take the time to attend First Friday.
